The expulsion of 23 students on grounds of religious
beliefs was a medieval step , illegal, unethical and unbecoming of a
medical college and a Higher Education Ccommission.
Every few weeks the HEC spends millions of Rupees of
public money to take out self projection supplements in the
newspapers. They however fail to take steps that are fundamental to
producing truly educated, civilised and tolerant graduates.
Let me give three examples.
A. 2 years back a christian girl was denied admission
in King Edward Medical university, and a student with less marks was
given preference by giving 20 extra marks for being Hafiz Quran. We
protested for full one year, but the HEC refused to take any action.
B. In 2007 when the army chief threw away the
constitution, I asked the Head of HEC to ask all universities to make a
public protest - as rule of law was the basis of a civilised society.
Surely HEC did just the opposite. Supported the dictator.
C. HEC played no role when 23 students were chucked out
for being Ahmadi. HEC should have sacked the Principal for taking this
decision and reinstated the students immediately. Not doing so,
represents that the state itself is the biggest patron of intolerance
and religious bigotry.
