Dear Salahuddin Saheb
In my posting of January 17, 2010 on education
in Pakistan I wrote:
"Those of us who
condemn mullah for establishing madrassas and
the downtrodden class for sending their children
to be “educated” there do not realize that it is
a matter of simple economics. The poor masses
have no choice except free-madrassas. Secular
education in Pakistan is a luxury and available
only to those who have tesha-e-zar".
Some commentators disagreed with me and insisted
that Pakistan has government-run free education
system up to 10th grade.
Incidentally today I was watching IQ
Discussion: "Pakistan:
What next?”, a town hall meeting in
London with an interesting panel including Imran
Khan and Jaswant Singh, ex-Foreign Minister of
India. The proceedings are in 12 parts. In Q&A
session a question was asked about the state of
education in Pakistan. Following is Imran Khan's
reply that is not different what I wrote.
"Education in Pakistan is just for tiny rich
elite. If you are rich you can afford quality
education, otherwise the education (system) is
collapsed" (Imran
Khan)"
