Belief
is an island of safety
Dear Pervaiz,
I want to share this with members
of Family of the Heart.
Ray Dodd is one of America's
best authorities on belief. He runs a blog called Belief Works.
In a recent posting called
"The Island" he wrote:
Your
personal island of what you know is your island of safety. This island is
constructed of your beliefs, other people's opinions, and all your
knowledge, concepts and experiences.
We see what
we want to see according to what we believe. We even invent explanations
and predictions steeped in superstition, opinion, judgment and comparison
because of our inability to feel comfortable saying, "I just don't
know."
The
obsession to interpret and define everything severely constrains our
ability to perceive what is really happening. We generally accept the
reality of the world with which we are presented. We become fashioned by
the culture we live in and by the language we speak. We think we are what
we think.
If you
really want to change self-imposed limitations, venture off the Island of what you know. By stepping off this island
you may discover a whole other world. A world of mind-altering possibility.
