There is a mistake in the article: In
response to question no. 3, Maulana Azad
is quoted as:
"In the battle of Jamal [fought between
Imam Ali and Hadrat Aisha, widow of the
Holy Prophet] Qurans were displayed on
lances."
Referenced from Karen Armstrong's book,
"Islam" Page Pg 34-35: "Muawiyyah's
supporters put copies of the Quran on
the tips of their lances and called for
neutral Muslims to arbitrate between the
contestants in accordance with God's
word".
It was not the Battle of Jamal but of
Siffin (fought against Muawiyyah) where
Quran was displayed on lances. I doubt
that a learned man like Maulana Azaad
could make this mistake but on the flip
side, he can make a mistake since he is
a human being himself.
We do not have the source document ie,
published in the paper 'Chataan' in
1946. I think, since we do not have it,
we should look for the source document
or counter-check every historical claim
made in this article to judge its
authenticity.
Please correct me if I am mistaken.
Thanks,
Faraz Masood.
