Why has democracy not taken root in most Muslim countries? - FOTH SEMINAR APR. 02, 2006

        Syed I. Haider

TO  FOTH

A typical drawing room style highly intellectual discussion, which we are all so very well used to is warming up ; a kind of Molotov mixture where neither the subject remains the same nor the terminology of the subject has the same meanings.

MUSLIM , STATE  and  DEMOCRACY are the three Terms used in the title of the seminar.

Term MUSLIM is an Islamic Term ,used and defined in Quran in numerous ayaat. A name given to those who surrender to the command of God by Holy Prophet Ibrahim a.s.(22 : 78) Quran says, "Ebrahim was neither a YEHUDI nor  a NUSRANI but a DEVOUT  MUSLIM"(3:67).

(Note that the root of the words Muslim and Islam is the same.)

The land where such Muslims who live exactly according to the command of God called Islam as given in Quran is worthy of being called a MUSLIM STATE.

When these Muslims settle their day to day affairs according to The Book, with mutual consultations called SHURAH,  then if you like, you may invent a new  term and call their governance as ISLAMIC DEMOCRACY

After taking the terminology of the seminar title into its proper perspective The Friends Of The Heart ( I have yet to know whose heart) can very well see the relevance of my deliberation # 34. and irrelevance of major part of our  scholarly debate.

With regards to all
