HAMID AHMAD CHAUDHRY

Why has democracy not taken root in most Muslim countries? - FOTH SEMINAR APR. 02, 2006

Dear Pervaiz

Thanks for the mail. This is a very good topic. In my opinion, it is the paid and patronized Mullah who has always preached unquestionable, unconditional obedience to the ruler and has never had the courage to remind him that it is incumbent upon him to be a real servant of the people he rules. That is why it is generally believed that Islam does not encourage democracy. Most of us believe that the Mullah understands Islam. We may not
say, but this is how we behave:  "It is my religion, but Maulvi Sahib knows what it is. " More later.
