It was indeed a wonderful meeting on Sufism on 5th
of June at the North York Public Library. The speakers were all experts on the
subject and tried to give the audience the best possible explanation as to how
the process works. In the late 1960's when I was exploring the subject of my
own I went to the Himalayas and met a sadhu in Almora, Uttar Pradesh. In
course of the discourse he told me a story. Once upon a time there was a doll
made of salt. One day the doll decided to fathom the depth of the ocean and in
the process the doll melted itself and totally lost its own entity. The sadhu
told me that that's what happens if you can achieve unity with Lord. The
question I raised in the meeting was that if a soul attains unity with the
Supreme entity what happens to the soul? Does it attains the qualities of the
Supreme Being? Or it is a journey between the assimilation and the material
world? Another serious question comes to my mind about the assumption of the
God's existence. The idea of God is not based on science, it's a pure belief
and an assumption which is based on our inability to know the final truth. We
also faithfully assume that God does not have a shape, body or anything which
can identify a being. On that presumption we cant draw a figure and therefore
when a faithful seeks union with Him what is the picture that a human mind
can perceive and submit to? In that meeting there was a very knowledgeable
psychologist as well who gave some scientific shots to the issue but not
really recognized such a phenomenon which was interesting and was thought
provoking as well. I will appreciate some answers on these questions. I am not
an atheist but I am looking for Him.
